The Head Edge Part 6
Topic- Between the Ears
Quote
“All competition takes place mainly on a five-and-a-half-inch area: the space between your ears.”
― Adaptation of a quote taken from professional golf legend Bobby Jones
The Conversation
During competition, everyone has ongoing conversations that take place inside of our heads. “Inner monologue” or “self-talk” are terms to describe these conversations. Typically, there are two competing voices: the negative critic and the positive coach. Which voice will you choose to listen to?
Golfer Arnold Palmer kept this in his locker:
Thinking
~Walter D. Wintle
If you think you are beaten, you are.
If you think you dare not, you don’t.
If you’d like to win but you think you can’t,
It’s almost a cinch you won’t.
If you think you’ll lose, you’re lost,
For out of the world we find
Success begins with a fellow’s will -
It’s all in the state of mind.
If you think you’re outclassed, you are;
You’ve got to think high to rise;
You’ve got to be sure of yourself before
You can ever win a prize.
Life’s battle doesn’t always go
To stronger or faster men;
But sooner or later the man who wins,
Is the one who thinks he can.
The bottom line:
Our thoughts become our actions. Our pattern of thinking shapes and influences how we feel, and the way we feel affects the way we perform. Which will you choose to listen to, the negative critic or the positive coach? Learn to tune out the negative critic and to tune in to the positive coach.
