What is “the edge”?
The dictionary provides multiple definitions for the word “edge.” The meaning of the term on which I would like to focus is “a quality or factor that gives superiority over close rivals or competitors” (“edge”). The edge is sometimes referred to as “that little something extra,” “that inch (or second) that separates good from great,” or “the difference-maker.”
How do you develop “the edge”?
There is no simple formula. It requires a combination of the following factors:
· Countless hours of deliberate, focused practice
· Willingness to embrace adversity and to learn from mistakes and failure
· Openness to honest feedback and constructive criticism
· Willingness to sacrifice (time, sleep, saying “no” when necessary)
· Ability to focus effort and energy on the factors that are controllable, and to not get sidetracked by those that are not
· Embracing the power of positive thinking and visualization/mental rehearsal
Participating in extracurricular activities--whether as an athlete, musician, singer, debater, orator, or actor--provide the opportunity to develop and maintain the edge.
The purpose of this blog is to address the factors that allow one to develop the edge and the crucial role that extracurricular activities play. I will share some of the most important lessons that I have learned through my involvement in extracurricular activities as a participant, coach, advisor, and supervisor.
